Volunteer Qualifications/Training

All volunteers working with the horses in any manner must meet these basic qualifications:

  • A positive attitude, open mind and an appreciation for differences in people and horses;
  • Minimum of 13 years old;
  • Have adequate vision to ensure safety of horse and participants;
  • Ability to hear, understand, and follow instructions in English; and
  • Completion of application and signed waiver.


Volunteers who wish to sidewalk or lead must meet these additional qualifications:

  • Comfortable interacting with and supporting individuals with disabilities;
  • Ability to walk for 30 minutes at a time (indoors and outdoors) on uneven surfaces;
  • Be able to lift up to 20 pounds above head; and
  • Commit to volunteer for a minimum 2 hours per week for length of the 8 to 12 week session.


All volunteers must attend a required introductory training session.  All volunteers working with horses in any manner must attend additional required training sessions for each activity (whether grooming, tacking, sidewalking or leading) and obtain certification for each activity. The initial training for a sidewalker which includes a tour of the barn, a video explaining our program and practice time in the arena takes approximately 1 1/2 hours.
